Arianrhod, Blodeuwedd ac y Cyhyraeth
My artwork this semester has been based on scenes from my dreams and inspired by mythology and fairy tales. 'Arianrhod, Blodeuwedd ac y Cyhyraeth' is a painting based on female characters from Welsh mythology. The circle to the left of the scene depicts Arianrhod, the goddess of the moon or "Lady of the silver wheel." Blodeuwedd is the goddess of strength and protector of women, she was mistreated by her husband in life and became a goddess to stop this from happening to others, she is depicted as an owl which is referenced as the shape of the two eyes behind the scene. The Cyhyraeth is a Welsh mythical monster similar to the banshee as you can hear it's scream just before you die.
I have recreated this scene in a variety of ways including oil paintings and 3D models. I ended up using watercolor on layered paper because I really like the effect of creating layers as I have in my models and wanted to include the expressiveness achieved by watercolors.
Watercolor on layered paper. 11 x 15 cm.
