Your Void
In December 2020, my hamster (Edmond, better known as Ed), died tragically and suddenly, after battling a cancerous tumour in his stomach. I dedicated a semester of work trying to capture the absence of his presence. His cage was the first thing you would see when entering my room; after I removed his cage into storage, the void left was obvious and painful. I created the structure by wrapping his stage in cling film and covering that in sellotape, to hold the structure. I chose the transparent material to express the lack of tangibility. I sat and tried to hide within the cage structure to represent dealing with a particular stage in processing grief: denial.
Cling-film, Sellotape. 16 x 27 x 18 inches.
