Put On A Happy Face' combines both the abstract and portraiture elements of my practice in order to demonstrate the inner chaos within a person. Despite the serenity surrounding the individual, there is turmoil and disarray that remains confined to their body. The only glimpse of their identity is shown the diminishing features of their face, which appears emotionless to the world and stares blankly back at the viewer. The title of this piece alludes to the idea of a performative happiness, putting on a mask of emotion in order to face the day. The melting smiley faces demonstrate a more sinister side to this façade as well as hinting to the idea that even this fake happiness is slipping away.
